Benefits of Barley
Barley is a cereal grain. It is mainly consumed in the form of porridge. It is used in both alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages. Barley water and barley tea are popular nonalcoholic beverages. Barley is the key ingredient of beer and whiskey. Various kinds of barley are there: Hulled barley, pearl barley and pot barley.
In recent days, barley is used many recipes. Pot barley is used in soups and boiled hulled barley is used in making salads. In Indian cuisine, barley is used to make Khichidi or biryani. Like oats and corn, barley flakes are also available in the market. Barley pasta is available as well.
The mixture of barley and wheat flour is used for making chapattis. Several chefs use this flour for making snacks, cakes and cookies. The juice made with barley grass has several nutrients, proteins and antioxidants. Whole grain barley contains high protein and fiber. It consists of iron, calcium, magnesium, potassium, zinc and phosphorus.
The high fiber in barley prevents gallbladder stones. It improves immunity by promoting the growth of ‘good’ bacteria in the gut. It aids in digestions as well.
Barley lowers blood cholesterol levels and prevents cardio vascular diseases. The glycemic index of barley is low which helps in lowering blood sugar levels. Hence, it is considered as the healthier food than the oats to diabetic patients.
The selenium in barley increases the metabolism which helps in controlling weight gain. It improves the functioning of thyroid hormone and prevents many related diseases thereby. It protects skin. Barley treats boils when applied on them.
Barley is a good food for patients who suffer from anemia. It helps in prevention of cancer. Barley treats several stomach ailments including stomachache, diarrhea and inflammatory bowel syndrome, and bronchitis.
